Chocolat Chaud

I had to have it. It would seem that I, Jenii, am a severe impulse buyer of the fancy packaging vein. If it’s got neat packaging, I will most likely buy it based off that. Fancy packaging AND filled with HOT CHOCOLATE MIX? Yes. YES. ALL OF MY YES. THROWS MONEY. Yes.

I know. I have a problem. It’s only with hot choco, I swear!

Petite Maison’s Rich and Dark Chocolat Chaud

Just look at this bad boy. A TIN?! It’s like they knew I would see this and snatch exactly one off the shelves at DiBruno Brothers on Chestnut. They knew they vintage styling of the early 1900s was sure to hook me. Even the blue appealed to le Tomato’s Spurs fan side! Yes. This was destiny indeed.

Rich and Dark Chocolat Chaud

This Fall, Wildly Delicious sets out to redefine the hot cocoa category with our incredible dark chocolate blend packaged in an exquisite European retro tin. Our nod to green packaging principles was to develop a package that would become a keepsake and never see a landfill. More than just a pretty face, we tested more than 40 cocoas before developing our own blend. A blend worthy of bearing the Petite Maison name. No artificial fillers or colour.

Yes. Thank you. The cocoa was indeed dark and rich. There was a fair sweetness but just enough to soften the bitterness of the cacao. Milk, despite it’s creamy disposition, was what this called for to tame the strength of the cocoa – water will not do.

Below, you can see my path to bittersweet paradise…

There were, as you can see, little ‘drops’ of solid chocolate in the powder. I believe it was little chunks of Belgian chocolate to further enrich what the powder would bestow upon the milk.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yes. More. So good. Alas, 2/8 servings have been consumed alone. At $17USD (+tax) a tin, this is indeed at the steeper end of cocoa mixes. It was good. I might not remember to purchase again but I’ll always have the tin for memories!

Fine memories of velvety chocolate to tide me over until my wisdom teeth come out. This is my last post until then…how very quaint it be in regards to food. C’est la vie!

Clarisonic Mia2 (Sephora Detox kit)

Sephora Detox Kit

Clarisonic Mia2 (Sephora Detox kit)
$149 (+tax, 2013)
Purchased from Sephora

This review…is waaaaaaay overdue. Like nearly a year exactly overdue. Where have I been?! We’ll get to that in different posts. Instead, let’s talk about this little baby.

It’s weighty in your hand, a good heft to it, fits nicely (comfortable hold). There’re two settings on it: Delicate & Universal, tapping once on the speed button for the prior and twice for the latter. Generally, I use the latter (Universal) speed more often than not. I have oily, acne-prone skin that requires some earnest cleansing.

The device works on a timer, pausing between zone cycles. I forget the amount of time per zone but instructions suggest the following: forehead, nose+chin, cheek and cheek. For the most part, it’s helpful to allocate cleansing areas to ensure you manage to get to all portions of your face. The only issue is if you’d like to do large portions, such as the neck. The pauses are unnecessary then.

You can indeed, use the device with any face wash of your choosing. It is highly recommended to use one without any abrasives (microbeads, crushed things, etc.). This is just overload, your skin will be over-scrubbed and sensitive and/or painful afterwards. A gel will work best, a cream will also work.

For me: I hadn’t noticed any significant changes IMMEDIATELY to my skin but then again, I’m just not paying attention (especially with daily use). Instead, I notice immediately when I DON’T use it. My skin doesn’t break out terribly anymore but I do notice, I breakout sooner without the use of the Mia2. When I don’t use it, my skin seems duller, as if there’s a layer sitting on top. I also notice quite a few flakes from dry spots during pauses in use (mostly in the winter months). So overall, utilization has been rather good for keeping my skin clean and balanced.

**I have read that some people do experience a ‘purging’ period when they begin using their Clarisonic – to which they break out even more. Switch to the Delicate setting, decrease frequency of use until things clear up. Switch to a gentler cleanser if necessary. If/when things clear up, slowly resume your desired frequency of use and setting.

Would I recommend it: Yes!
Pros: Superior (topical, mechanical) cleansing + exfoliation. Versatile, you can use it with your preferred cleanser. Rechargeable. Two-speed.
Cons: Expensive.

Burt’s Bees Rosewater Toner

Burt’s Bees Rosewater Toner
$11~ (+tax)
Purchased from Wegmans

Mostly on a whim, I was thinking about going back to Shiseido’s Pureness line but then read some info about witch hazel and rosewater as toners. Decided to give it a try. I didn’t have time to get to a health food shop to purchase plain ol’ rosewater so I saw this at the Wegmans I was at and gave it a try.

Rose Water — Luxuriously gentle, Rose Water is distilled from fresh flowers and the essential oil of roses. It’s a mild astringent with a truly beautiful aroma.

rosa damascena (rose) flower water, alcohol denat., glycerin, centaurea cyanus (cornflower) flower extract, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) leaf extract, yucca schidigera leaf extract

I wasn’t too fond of the alcohol presence to be honest. But it doesn’t burn/sting upon application. The other ingredients aren’t irritable on my skin either, so a bonus in that manner. It’s also not overly drying. Though my skin tends to be oily and acne-prone, this stuff works quite decently! Most other astringents/toners tend to overdry thus entering my skin in this crap-cycle of overproducing oil to compensate. VICIOUS.

It also doesn’t interact with my moisturizer so no secondary effects! My face just smells like a roses! Not to mention my evening moisturizer is KORRES Wild Rose 24-Hour Moisturizing & Brightening Cream. BAM! My face smells like a Valentine’s Day bouquet!

So overall, it’s a low/fairly priced item. The bottle isn’t huge but considering the amount you use, it should last for a while. The packaging is just a twist-cap bottle so if you’re inclined, you can also purchase a small spritzer and apply the product via mist instead of dabbing the stuff onto cotton rounds and wiping. It depends on your skin and preference. *I prefer the cotton method since you can remove any additional junk your cleanser may leave behind.

Would I recommend it: Sure! It really helps clean up what cleansers leave behind!
Pros: Cheap, all natural ingredients, mild
Cons: Strong rose scent (if you’re not into rose scents), bottle/packaging – must be used with cotton rounds or via spritzer bottle

Dearie by Lauren Y.

Does this count as a review? Maybe I don’t know, maybe I’ll just ramble on about various bits and bobs about the items I purchased from this shop?

I’ve been stalking this shop on and off (as I do with many etsy, self-made accessory/clothing, hand-crafted item shops). I have this really bad habit where I’ll watching a shop with things I want to purchase indefinitely and just randomly buy various items at some point. It can be devastating, sometimes filling carts to make up for lost time/product much to my wallet’s dismay. Either way, there was a free-shipping offer so it was just the right time with the right products for me to throw my cash at.

ANYWAY, Dearie is a brand specializing in accessories for Morigirl, vintage vignettes, items GREAT for the Classic Lolita. The brooches/clips range various styles and are well crafted. Designs are retro and yet still adorable and generally can coordinate with many styles. I purchased the Honey Biscuit 2-Way Clip/Brooch and Gilded Crown Military Badge (ivory/orange).

TODAY, I received this packaging in the mail by complete surprise – I had actually forgot I ordered something. I know. Horribly that I spent X amount of money and didn’t remember. Note to self: do NOT go into finance/accounting.

Neat, secure packaging. Everything arrived intact and in a timely manner. Red crinkle shreds were a classy touch!

The brooch and brooch/pin were individually packed, each with their own care instructions. The pin, business card and chocolate were a nice touch!! Cute extras indeed!

Items are accurate as advertised, true to size/color/design. Construction is solid. And the colors are flattering towards quite a few color schemes. (I tend to choose neutral colors when I can, or something I can use for multiple outfits at least). I’ll have to take photos again with these in action!

Overall, I’m really pleased with this brand and the products! I’ll be watching for new designs!
